What Happened to CraigZoom?
Dear CraigZoom users,
We just received a lengthy notice from Craigslist attorneys with a:
DEMAND FOR IMMEDIATE CEASE AND DESIST OF CRAIGSLIST ABUSE
- accessing craigslist to design, develop, test, update, operate, modify, maintain, or support any program, application or service (including, without limitation, any device, technology, product, computer program, mobile device application, website, or mechanical or personal service) that enables or provides access to, use of, operation of or interoperation with craigslist
- copying, aggregating, displaying, distributing, performing or making a derivative use of craigslist or any content posted on craigslist whether done directly or through intermediaries (including but not limited to by means of spiders, robots, crawlers, scrapers, framing, iframes or RSS feeds),
- impairing or interfering with the integrity, functionality, performance, usefulness, usability, signal-to-noise ratio or qualify of all or any part of craigslist
So… a major bummer eh?
I would like to send you a report with some FREE tips on how you can do easier nationwide searches on Craigslist on your own, without using CraigZoom.
So put your name and your email on the right, and I will send it out to you right away.
Again, thank you for your past support.
Rita Wilhelm
Update: I just want to thank you all for the nice comments you made below. It means a lot, so thank you.

3 days agoHey There!
Could not express my thanks to you for such a brilliant platform. Simple, Very Functional, Loved using it to speed up my searches. Unlike hunt and peck routine on Craigslist. Guess it was coming though. Continually had account problems on Craigslist, Spam, etc. If i owned Craigslist I would be all over this software for my users. Hope things work out for you, once again thanks for your hard work.

3 days agoRita,
Thank you. It was a great resource while it lasted. It sounds like it is only a letter not an order from a court. It would probably be very costly for Craigslist to follow through on their threat.

3 days agoWOW! Just because you came up with a better platform, now they don’t like it. They could have asked us what we want in order to buy and sell stuff? We liked your way much better!!! Maybe you should offer then to buy yours from you? God knows they need it. Its terrible to search that site! clicking on every city in gods creation to find what you need?
Thank for all your help over the years……

Rita,
Please , send me a PM and let’s make some much deserved Lemonade out of those Lemons…

3 days agoThank you for all of your hard work. I buy, sell, and trade vintage European and Japanese cars as a hobby.I can’t use ebay as that is “high retail pricing” in my business. I can’t search the entire United States for a specific car using Craigslist as it would be too time consuming. Your site made my hobby possible and I don’t know what I’m going to do now. This is a bummer. Your site made CL better and benefited everyone. I thought CL was all about independent thinking and community..Bogus. Thanks again for the great site. You will be greatly missed.

3 days agoThis was the best thing going to help me find the cool car parts I needed. I met alot of good people also on Craigzoom. Whats the big deal? Because of Lawyers why else!! Who needs the dirt bags. They are going to sue me now!!! Kiss my booty Lier I ment Lawyer!! Or is it losers? Thanks for what you had done. It was great. -

3 days agoRita
I really put to use your search engine capabities in the past. I was able to quickly search using key words (various spelling and vast area of words) across 4 states (all cities) in my regional area. Now it is going to take 10 or more times the amount of time to process.
Maybe you should look at patenting your process and sell it to the fine folks that maintain Craigslist.
I enjoy Craigslist for the advertisement of items for sale.Thanks.

3 days agoRita, Really sorry to hear about the legal concern. Have been involved with sililar issues. Loved your product and perhaps there is an option to consider? If your users (we) would pony up with a few $’s each, perhaps a “one time payment” from you to craigslist would allow you a “right to use”? Perhaps it would be worth a request to your users and CL? Did Craigzoom get the same cease and desist letter? When in doubt, follow the money. Mark

This has been the best tool for searching C.L. I have bought many things all over the country using it, and have logged many miles doing so. Sad to see it go.
Thank you Rita for providing this great tool, and hope we meet again.
Craigslist NEEDS to consult Rita on how their search SHOULD work.. -

I know the young man who designed and worked on this, and frankly that’s like a slap in the face! If the web site is that damn good, why don’t Craigslist hire him to work on their web site!!!??
Bring Back CraigZoom Damnit! I was using it and Craigslist.com as well!
I’ll say this for the young man who built & designed it…….

3 days agoAre these guys serious, all CraigZoom did was grow their business by allowing for simplified searching. I known I use it regularly to search for items across the country and don’t have time to search State after State. Taking down CraigZoom can only harm craigslist.

3 days agoWhat a bunch of clowns CL is. First jaxed, now craigzoom. Someday these types of notices will bite them in the ass and they will realize that the internet is mostly aggregated information.
-
This was more of a benifit to craigslist than a negative. I cant believe they would want to do this to something that compliment there goal. I wiil not use craigslist any longer if there is no craigzoom I have found way more than I ever did just using the actual site search. Why is http://www.searchtempest.com still up and running? In my opinion it is a crappy site compared to craigzoom. My opinion is that craigzoom was a safeguard for consumers. It gave a person the chance to actually research the going rate for items they were looking at purchasing and doing some comparison. I think craigzoom the best publicity craigslist could have
-
The creator of craigzoom should make there own classified site and put the list to shame. The design of craigzoom puts the list to shame. (even if it take info from the list)

3 days agoFirst jaxed last year, now craigzoom. The reason this stuff exists is Craigslist sucks in many ways for searching, not the least of which in their search for sites that do a much better job servicing their customers than they do. Oh well, there will be another pop up, just hope it’s soon. Thanks craigxoom for all your work.
-
Jim Buckmaster and Craig Newmark need a proctological exam for that move i think everyone who used craigzoom should boycot craigslist really are you two idiots that F ing stupid somebody out in far left field is helping your web site and you stop them get a life or fix that 1970s ass website you call craigslist you might check with Rita Wilhelm for some pointers on how to make website user friendly

3 days agoCraigzoom served me so well! Thank you! Why Craigslist can’t understand that users need at least a complete state search option, not to mention US-wide! I have found so many items of interest out of my local area and either drove or had the seller ship them to me. Both sides happy. I see nothing wrong with that. Shame on CL!

3 days agoHey Steve: PISS OFF. I’ve given away more cars than you’ve probably ever owned. I hook my friends up with parts, leads on cars, ect. I’m not a flipper by any stretch. That’s why I said Hobby, you dipshit. I don’t sell cars for a living, I do it for fun. If I break even, Great!
Is it my job to educate the seller as to what they have? “You want $1500 for your rusted crap car that I’m going to part out anyway, no no no, on ebay this would sell for $2000. Never mind me pulling it out of the weeds, transporting it, my time involved. Here, let me pay you the difference” Yeah right.
As for cheating the tax payers….I pay my share every year.
Sounds like you got burned by a flipper. -

3 days agoYes, a major bummer.
CraigZoom really enhanced my my use of CraigsList.
Like CraigsList, but Craig, dude…you gotta lighten up!
-
Craigzoom made me so happy I found the special car a family member in the millitary was looking for. We got the car purchased flew out there and got the car. If it wasn’t for craigzoom I never would have found what he was looking for locally thanks craigzoom.

i love craigzoom!! i have been able to make great friends and purchases that normally I would not have found … this really sucks! yep , you made it better and they can’t stand it , what a bunch of immature morons

3 days agoCraigzoom was a great tool to save me money and make contact with people with items for sale across the USA. I have bought and sold large items several times using Craigzoom and feel indebted to craigzoom. For instance tomorrow I am leaving Missouri headed for Maryland to buy a vintage import car I found thanks to Craigzoom. In the process I used Ebay and Craigzoom to sell spots on an empty trailer. Otherwise I would be running empty across the USA burning 4 buck a gallon gas all paid out of my wallet. Needless to say, this wouldn’t be done. Craigzoom has made it possible for people to connect to get services/goods moved/sold more efficiently. It would appear that something can be done by craigslist and craigzoom to find middle or common ground to continue the national searches craigzoom has created. It is a badly needed service.

3 days agoIt is just a matter of time before Craigslist is taken over by moneyed interests who want to make serious money off it. Bad enough that they killed all the newspapers in the US, but when the cost of an ad is $10 or more, and there are not alternatives, we will all rue the day we abandoned the good old classified ads in newspapers.

My favorite site shut down! I have used craigzoom for a long time and yes it will be missed!Like everything else once you find a good thing it either closes down, changes or sells out! Thanks Rita for all my great deals your site allowed me to find in a quick efficient manner, your site cut my look up time in half and I switched all my buddies over too your site.I think you should come up with a site that can compete with craigslist and ebay,as they have been changing things for the worse!
Thanks Again!!!!! We will miss you! -
what a bunch of dumb asses I have bought more stuff from using craigszoom than craigslist itself,
Craigzoom has saved me me a alot of hours looking for things. I wonder if Craigslist thought to ask the people who post instead of their lawyers ( no probably not to easy) Thanks Craigzoom hello ebay -

3 days agoCraigslist needs to wake up and see they have issues as far as how to search their site. I just used Craigzoom to buy a part 1100 miles away that I could NEVER get on my local CL listings.
So I guess they can take google off line next ????
Google Search String
“item I am looking for” site:craigslist.org – then on the left of the screen pick the date ranges
Why can’t CL figure this out.
Ditto above comments CraigZoom rocks and SearchTempest sucks almost as bad as CL.

2 days agoHEY CRAIGS LIST ………….NOW FEAR THIS !!
Dear CraigZoom i am really, really sad to see you go. doesnt graigs list realize its sites like
yours that makes their site worth looking at. I love your national and state search features. I will simply go to ebay now. Quite honestly, craigs list actually sucks as a stand alone item. It is only
a basic a local e-newspaper to see whats for sale, nothing more and to inconvenient to use in
any other way. Also, you know why I use/ used craigzoom?? Its because craig zoom was the easiest to use !!!
Again, I am sorry to see this site go. I wish you had the money to fight this. After all, craig zoom is nothing more than a search engine with a limited scope. You search data just like
yahoo or google. Whats the difference, oh I know, the big boys are making billions and craigzoom sadly cant make enough money to take craigs list (with an vastly inferior) product
to task. Craigs list is a public site for for all users. And remember, craigs list doesn make each viewer sign a box of terms and conditions each time a viewer comes on to search for a rummage sale or a used bike. So whats the difference or problem that craig zoom actually makes their site better and more functionable for free. Its like a vendor working for nothing.
Heck, you should invoice craigs list for the “value added” or they should at least pay for your band with.I personally have been inolved in creating websites that currently do many, many millions of dollars of revenue each year. To create a simple “want ad/ for sale site like craigs list is not
a novel concept, protected, or all that complicated……………………………Hmmmmmmm…..
makes a guy wonder……………….alway looking for the next project…………
Besides, craigs list has the “feel” of what a couple of college burnouts designed in the college
dorm, and are still working on it out of their their 2 bedroom apartment, with one bedroom as the
craigs list office. Craigs list hasnt evolved much since their inception. What makes craigs list so awsome any way – Nothing , thats what ! They are the sears and kmart of the past waitng for
for a walmart or target to bury them in the ground. I have seen business like this in the past, and
that is the correct word to describ them – past ! Screw craigs list as smarter people with better concepts will come out and fly right past them. Thanks for everything craig zoom !!
-
Sonny
2 days agoThat is terrible.
Although I still used Craiglist for local items, I used yours for anything I couldn’t find locally.
It was so easy to use to locate things around the country and then decide if it it was worth going to the expense of obtaining the items at different distances. A lot of the things would not have shown up on the craigs list searches in a timely fashion.
Thanks for all your hard work in making this possible. -

2 days agoAs a guy who has to travel to look for work in this economy, losing this service just made finding anything that much more difficult. Yours is not the first site they have done this too. With both sites, I could type in “Crane Operator” and search by state or by country, instead of city by city by city by city…
Makes no sense, the sites redirected to CL anyways so it’s not like anyone was losing out. The previous commenter was right…it’s nothing more than seeing someone develop a better search platform and being a little crybaby. Pretty much akin to taking ones ball and going home.

2 days agoNot Cool of Craigslist. CraigZoom offered a site (world wide, country wide) search capability. I don’t see how CraigZoom infringed on Craigslist’s site. Does that mean the WebBrowser I’m viewing Craigslist also is infringing on Craigslist too!!!!????
Really sucks to see Craigslist puts time into shutting down honest and useful sites that bring honest and real people to craigslist. Sad to see Craigslist does nothing to put these resources after the Prostitutes, Spammers, and Fraudsters who have infestered the site.
Thank you for Craigzooom and all of the useful searches it and finds it gave to me.

2 days agoIt always make me laugh when bureaucrats try so save their job by stopping progress and evolution! Your website was way ahead and so much more useful than the original website.
Since it was offering so much more potentiel buyer to the people posting their ad, it’s clear that this action is certainly not in the interest of people selling or buying on craiglist, and the interest of craiglist bureaucrats lies elsewhere!
Eistein was right “great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds”
The beauty of the internet is that if you close one site, a few new ones will take the empty spot!

2 days ago@ Wayne – I believe the competing websites will be going down as well. They also received notices. They’re probably still deciding on how to deal with the issue, and whether or not they will be fighting it.
I’ve been through one of these legal battles before, and from experience, I know the process. I’m just the little guy that doesn’t have deep pockets – so I know can’t really out legal them without going to the poor house first. I’ll run out of money just through their legal maneuvers. That’s probably why I’m the first to comply.
I am however working on a report, with some tips that will make it all easier for you to use Craigslist for nationwide or statewide searches on your own, where you won’t have to rely on any of these sites. I have 3 different techniques, and I’ll send out the first one by Friday. I think you might even find that some of these techniques will save you more time in the long run.

2 days agoHey Andrew. That’s about the response I expected a flipper and a tax cheat.
Do you honestly expect anyone to believe that you buy, sell, and part out cars on a regular basis as a hobby with no profit motive? And do you deny not reporting the income you make on car and parts sales to the IRS?
You’re running a part time business buying and selling cars and parts. Just because you enjoy the work doesn’t make it a hobby.
And nope, I’ve never been burned by your flipper cohorts. There’s nothing wrong with making money – - – I just can’t stand flippers like yourself who try to pass themselves off as hobbyists. And every year when I look at my tax returns and realize I pay more money in taxes than an average U.S. family makes, I get really annoyed by tax cheats like you.
===============
Hey Steve: PISS OFF.
Craigzoom was a wonderfully practical tool its a wonder why craigslist doesn’t figure it out. Thanks so much for making my searches effective and economical.

2 days agoI doubt that they will follow through with legal action because of the expense. A lawyer can write anything thing he wants, but it means nothing. Only a court order can shut you down.

2 days agoHey Steve, First off, All I was trying to do was complement the lady on her hard work on what was a great website.
Second, Where did I say I did this on a regular basis?? You don’t believe that someone would do this without profit as a motive?? Well, maybe I just run with a different crowd than yourself, but we are more like a brotherhood. We give each other stuff all the time. Help each other out for a couple of beers, but that is how VW guys roll I guess. You probably wear a polo shirt and have your brotherhood bonding on a golf course somewhere. Good for you, at least your finding it. I guess if you pay more in taxes than most of us on here make in a year, it’s no wonder that you believe that folks are only in anything for the money. -
Mike
2 days agoBummer please send me the report on how to access nationwide searches.
Thanks -

2 days agoUnbelievable. At least give us something to replace it. I would have gladly paid a subscription for this site.

2 days agoThis is really a painful development. I used CZ regularly to search for vintage items that would quickly be bought by the first finder. And they were always found in the most obscure cities. Searching cities one by one on CL is intolerable. I don’t know why this is considered detrimental by CL. Some folks complain just for the sake of complaining – and because they can.

Rita,
Your site was an AMAZING compliment to Craigslist. I run a small business employing 8 people – we export to 20+ countries. You helped us to locate and buy machines and tooling for our small manufacturing operation.(Yes – we sell “made in the USA”) You made our lives better, more efficient and simpler by offering us choices that would have taken days to accomplish what we could do in minutes on your site.
Craig enhances our lives and I LOVE and ADMIRE the MAN – you complemented each other.
In my humble opinion – a really misguided and poor choice.Best,
Stephen

2 days agoSo you made it easier for Craig’s List to be successful. How does this harm them???????? Your service made Craig’s List MUCH BETTER and more successful. So now they want to punish you for that? I’m not going to search every city in North America for something that should be available on one screen.
Shame on Craig’s List!
And thanks for what you have done.

2 days agoI’m so sorry that your service is ending – it has been a tremendous benefit to my national searching for a rare dig breed rescue organization. I used to spend hours (city by city) a week searching for dogs of this breed that were looking for new homes. Once I found CraigZoom it took only minutes to find all of the new posts that referenced this breed. I was able to quickly share these posts with volunteers around the country who could step up and help the dogs. I wrote to Craigslist several years ago (before your site) and explained why a national search would be helpful, but they weren’t interested in providing this service to users. I look forward to your tips, but know that it’s going to be hard adjusting to searching without your great service!

It is very difficult on Craigslist to have to limit my searches to individual cities.
Your site allowed me a limitless search.
Great and brilliant of you!
Good luck getting an alternative going!V

2 days agoThanks craigslist is like a 80′s model program it is too slow and no price options takrs way to much time. Wish they would update to something that was user friendly like yours.
This just sucks -

2 days agoYou guys rocked! I have completed so many business deals through the ability of searching that you gave the public! I found things that were hard to get, locally but available in another city, In reality CL is a bunch of modern day Liberal Nazi’s, I think its so messed up how they can allow a post of porn and display of naked private parts, for encounters or the third kind but you cant post a listing for a hunting rifle, or BB gun.. without getting flagged…!!! You should start your own site!!!
-

2 days agoThis site was an everyday staple for me, fuck craigslist.

2 days agoPretty absurd.
All you were doing is providing a service to Craigslist by expanding the search capability.
So much for the ‘gift horse’ addage.

2 days agoHi Rita,

2 days agoCan someone please explain why such an efficient easy to use site such as Craigzoom is perceived as a threat by the CL guys?
What specific CL TOU did Craigzoom contravene?
In one minute I was able to find a really nice pair of skis in Salt Lake and two days later the guy sent them to me in Seattle–thanks, Craigzoom– nice ride while it lasted
-
craigslist is NUTS to shut down the fastest way to search large areas for things for sale etc….no craigzoom means a huge loss of time and efficiency. MISS YOU TERRIBLY CRAIGZOOM!
-

2 days agowas so much easier using craigzoom to search craigslist than going there & having to re-enter search info everytime I wanted to search a new area. Iwill miss you.

1 day agoThanks for doing this while you could. I don’t understand why CL keeps shutting down great sites like this while at the same time refusing to do anything to make their site more user friendly. Keep up the good work.

Most excellent site. Used it often. Craigzoom has helped me acquire items at a lower cost than locally. Why would Craigslist shut down a portal which enhances and increases their traffic?

Your tool has been my main tool to compare prices and do research for purchases. I am not sure how I will fill the gap now that this is no longer available

1 day agoRita,
thanks for your work and enhancements to craigzoom. It was a great tool!!! Perhaps you should consider selling/leasing it to CL, their search process, well, …. is primitive. One the other hand, probably the best one could expect from knuckle-dragging neanderthals (my apology to the neanderthals to liken them to CL execs) -
Zach
1 day agoI really enjoyed using Craigzoom! It’s disappointing to see the Craigslist thugs have taken you down. Would it be possible to release this in an offline version? Maybe an application based tool?
Thanks again for letting the world use your site.
I wish you the best of luck.

24 hours agoThank you for your service. You helped me find a boat I was looking for. I do find it strange that Craigslist would want you to cease and desist. I would think they would want you to continue as you made finding items on Craigslist much easier and more useful.
-

23 hours agoNo real reason to remove Craigzoom.
Just a bunch of attorney mumble. -
This is not fair this site function much better than craigslist so why not allow it to be used. I think they should hire you to help them better their site rather than shutting you down. I am not sure if they have a legal rite to shut you down if you google and item it links to ebay and other sites so what is the difference. Thanks for your efforts and I hope that Craigslist rethinks this.
-
I like craigzoom
-
Thank you , it was awesome. I bought so many things..

what a useful site and a real problem for many of us who have depended on it [feelin a bit screwed now) hope u guys can find a new way around it and it all come down to money i guess

21 hours agoRita :
Your efforts have been a GOD Sent . I praise you for all of the work that you have done to make the access to Craigslist as great as it has been . Realize that you aren’t the first to have this happen to . Iused to go to Jaxed Mash to access Craigslist on a national basis , and they received the same notice that you received . They were the ones that lead me to your site and recomended that I use your site . Ebay is somewhat behind this process to halt your activities .
They wanted to eliminate Craigslist but couldn’t , so they bought something like 28% of Craigslist so they could have some control over how Craigslist was operated . Ebay was behind the effort to shut down Jaxed Mash , and nowit looks like it’syour turn . ( That Sucks ) If Ebay and Craigslist only realized that what you were doing was actually makingthem more business and exposure .
Good Luck to you and just maybe things will work out for the best .SIncerely ,
Bob -

21 hours agoCraigzoom was the greatest internet tool I have found. I have bought stuff all over the country. Have made some really great roadtrips to pick this stuff up too! Met some really nice people along the way. Some items I saved enough money to pay for the trip. Thanks for the opportunity to use Craigzoom. You will be missed on my computer.

20 hours agoThat really sucks!! craigszoom rocked it was a fast easy way to search all over!
-
Gary Seymour
20 hours agoWell, isn’t this a revolting development!!! Regular CL is a big pain in the butt…labor intensive to find something. If CL can’t do what you were doing, why shouldn’t someone else…it ups their traffic and that has to be good. They should buy your program (for lots of money) and get the CL users happy again.
Thanks for trying.
-
You are oviously intelligent enough to just create your own version of Craiglist and call it betterthancraigslist.com. All these years your service just improved upon an already good thing. If they cant update thier own site then put them out of business.
-
Donna
19 hours agoI just liked being able to search for things outside of my own area…sometimes you cannot find what you need locally! You’d think Craigslist would appreciate the extra help and publicity. Don’t lawyers have anything better to do?

9 hours agoWOW! Talk about cutting off your own foot! Craigslist is nearly impossible to use without handy search engines like yours to do nationwide searches for hard to find/unique items. I have sold items all across the country to people who found my item using craigzoom. You will definately be missed!
Thanks for the help while it lasted! -

9 hours agoThe original Craigslist does not cut it for the independent regular folk like me.

Craigslist.org is the best website ever, but wait, it’s a huge pain to navigate. Why can’t craigzoom help them with their shortcomings?

7 hours agobummer – CraigZoom was an incredibly useful site. Not sure how a site that helped drive buyers to craigslist sellers, is deemed a bad thing….
-

5 hours agoIts ridiculous that Craigslist did not provide a global search feature and when someone else does that, they restrict, I love Craigzoom a lot, and you guys deserve a pat.

5 hours agoEBAY stills sucks, even they know it because they bought CList a long time ago….

that’s pretty shortsighted of CraigsList. You definately addressed a shortcoming of their site.

4 hours agoBummer, I really enjoyed ability to surf all craigslist without the hassle. This will make finding items much harder. Hopefully craigslist will get off their “A…es” and implement a real search engine on their site. Theirs sucks and is full of crap from dealers and no ability to search nationwide. Good luck and thanks for a killer product.
Your problem was your product was better. They are loosing their add money cause their search engine and site sucks. People were using yours. Loosers didn’t like competition of a free market place so they hide behind attorneys. Bunch of fricken worms. LOL. -
Firemanjohn
3 hours agoOh after reading other comments it makes total sense. EBAY Natz’s shut you down so people forced to pay to sell items online. Craigslist taking to much business from EBAY. Time for the programers to start another not for profit site for use to buy and sell stuff for free.
EBAY you suck. -

59 mins ago@thonly1 Thanks! Maybe that will help.
I was also thinking that maybe Craigslist will pay attention to tweets. Not sure, but if we can get enough tweets out there, it might help.
If we use the hash sign #Craigslist it might catch their radar.
So tweeting something like:
Hey #Craigslist – Bring CraigZoom back ( or something to that effect )
-
